Nashik doctor performs bypass surgery on ‘high-risk’ patient
A city cardiologist has performed a coronary artery bypass surgery on a 41-year-old patient whose his heart was functioning only up to 7%, a high-risk condition for heart treatment. Jayesh Chhaya, a Mumbai-based travel agent, experienced back pain few months back and was treated for gastritis for a month till his heart function lowered to 7%. He was then diagnosed with cardiac problems. His relatives brought him to Nashik because of the availability of all the medical facilities at cheaper rates than Mumbai and Pune. On February 28, cardiologist Rahul Kaiche performed the arterial grafting coronary artery bypass grafting on him at a city hospital. He was discharged after a week. Elaborating about the surgery, Kaiche said, “The patient was being treated for gastritis in Mumbai when he complained of backache. He was admitted to a nursing home in Nashik with heart failure. Tests revealed that he had suffered a heart attack. His heart function was very poor.” The echocardiogram test revealed that the heart muscle thickness was slightly preserved. “Since he was young, we took the chance and performed the surgery. We wanted to give him the maximum benefit of the surgery. Less than 15 percent of heart function increases the chances of mortality and 7% is considered a high-risk factor,” the doctor said. “The main risk in such cases is kidney failure. There is a risk of sudden cardiac death a month after such operations. We did not speak about the risk to him and observed him over two months. He is leading a normal life now,” he said. 9/16/2019 Nashik doctor performs bypass surgery on ‘high-risk’ patient – Times of India https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/nashik/Nashik-doctor-performs-bypass-surgery-on-high-risk-patient/articleshowprint/34700106.cms 2/2 The post-operative care is most crucial in such cases and the paramedical staff and physiotherapist are required. The patient will be on medications for the rest of his life and the ECG will have to be done every three months. “If severe gas and acidity problems do not get cured for months together, echo test is necessary as it may be a cardiac problem,” said Kaiche. The doctor said the idea is to send a message that excellent treatment is available in Nashik. In serious cases, people rush to bigger cities but the same treatment is available here at lower cost. Chhaya alleged that some doctors in Mumbai and Nashik had refused to operate. “Now, I am living a normal life and am carrying out my regular activities. I even climb stairs rather than taking the lift.”
